ALHOSN’s Software Engineering team wins Best Oral Presentation award

Student representatives from the Software Engineering Department of ALHOSN University, a leading Abu Dhabi-based university dedicated to high-quality value-based education, won the Best Oral Presentation award for their “Capstone Project Manager Software” during the 2nd Annual Conference on Undergraduate Research on Applied Computing.

The conference was held from May 5 to 6, 2010 at Zayed University’s Dubai Campus and was sponsored by the Emirates Foundation. The main objectives of the conference were to promote undergraduate research in UAE universities and to feature forums among students, and industry leaders. A panel discussion on Undergraduate Research in Gulf Countries was conducted during the first day.

Then team presented an online application for managing capstone projects under the ‘IS in Education’ category. The application was developed by ALHOSN software engineering students Sara Karem Ahmed and Lamia Subhi Hussein.

Team supervisor Dr. Adel Khelifi, Assistant Professor at the Department of Software Engineering & Director of the Information Technology Department at ALHOSN University, commended the professionalism of the judging committee and the thoroughness of the evaluation process. “ALHOSN is very proud of the professionalism demonstrated by the software engineering team members. They displayed excellent presentation skills and truly embodied the school philosophy of ‘Global Knowledge with Local Vision’. The fact that the participating students were females also encourages other women to join the engineering field.”

More than 105 research papers were presented during the conference (46 oral presentations and 59 poster presentations). The 46 entries for the competition were from 24 various GCC-based institutions:

1. UAE (9):  Khalifa University of Science Technology and Research, ALHOSN University, Zayed University, University of Sharjah, UAE University, Manipal University Dubai, Higher Colleges of Technology,  Al-Ghurair University, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology.

2. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (5): King Saud University, Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University, King Abdulaziz University, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Prince Sultan University.

3. Bahrain: Royal University for Women.

4. Oman (6): Al Musanna College of Technology, Sultan Qaboos University, Dhofar University, Sohar University, Majan University College, Caledonian College of Engineering.

5. Qatar (3): Texas A&M University, Qatar University, Carnegie Mellon University.

Founded in 2005, ALHOSN University has emerged as a leading center for engineering studies in Abu Dhabi and across the Emirates. The institution is well-known for encouraging women to join engineering and other technical courses. ALHOSN offers 11 undergraduate and 7 graduate programs in three faculties accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to students of all nationalities.
