2009-07-26 – Amman – The first Jordanian Working Group in Mechatronics was recently established during a landmark meeting at the German Jordanian University (GJU) on July 8, 2009.
Representatives from Balqa Applied University (BAU), Hashemite University, Jordan University for Science and Technology (JUST), Philadelphia University, and the King Abdullah II Development and Design Bureau (KADDB) met at GJU to discuss the current state of Mechatronics Engineering and its various education programs in Jordan.
Mechatronics is defined as "the synergistic combination of mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, control engineering, systems design engineering, and computer engineering to create useful products. The purpose of this interdisciplinary engineering field is the study of automata from an engineering perspective, and serves the purposes of controlling advanced hybrid systems,” according to wikipedia.com (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechatronics).
The meeting included a presentation by GJU visiting professor Dr. Harald Loose on the history of the German Working Group in Mechatronics, while Dr. Peter Uecker, GJU Vice-President, and Dr. Hazem Kaylani, Dean of the School of Technological Sciences introduced GJU's Mechatronics Engineering program. Representatives from each of the other organizations also presented their programs and interests in this developing area.
The purpose of this working group is to exchange knowledge and experiences in Mechatronics, as well as to review curricula and best practices in teaching. The members of the group will jointly apply for research grants through EU programs and others, and will seek to join specialized labs. They will also organize Mechatronics conferences and workshops on a yearly basis, and plan to implement a dedicated website.
A follow-up meeting has been planned for late October, 2009 at Balqa Applied University. In attendance at the meeting were: Dr. Mazouz Salamat and Dr. Rateb Issa from Balqa Applied University; Dr. Asma Al-Tamimi and Dr. Suleiman Banittani from Hashemite University; Dr. Aznan Khadir, Dr. Mohammed Al-Fandi and Dr. Mohammad Jaradat from Jordan University of Science and Technology; Dr. Sabah Sheet, Dr. Tarek Tutunji and Dr. Ashraf Saleem from Philadelphia University; Dr. Bashar Al-Khasawneh from King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau.
